The best dog food for weight management
Auto-ranked by our ODF Score - updated August 19, 2026 . See how we rate
A weight-control food is not just a smaller portion of a normal one. The recipes here are lower in fat and lower in calories than the typical food we rate, and most carry more fibre - the point being that your dog can eat a satisfying bowl while taking in less energy. Every one is ranked by the same open score as the rest of the site, so nothing here is a diet food that has quietly given up on ingredient quality.

Scored, not sponsored
Every food is scored 0-100 on its label alone. No brand can pay to rank.
Filtered for this list
We only show foods that genuinely qualify as weight control - never padded to hit a round number.
Reranks automatically
When a score or price changes, the order updates itself. No stale listicle from 2019.
How to choose weight control
The honest bit: the food is the smaller half of the job. Portion size, treats and daily walks decide whether a dog loses weight, and treats are where most good intentions die - a couple of biscuits can wipe out a careful measure. Weigh the food rather than scooping it, and weigh the dog monthly.
Go slowly. Aim for something like 1-2% of body weight lost per week; crash dieting a dog is neither kind nor effective, and rapid loss carries real risks. If your dog is significantly overweight or has any other condition, plan the change with your vet.
Every card below shows the honest cost per day, because a lower-calorie food you feed correctly usually costs less to run than a rich one you over-serve.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best dog food for weight loss?
One that is lower in fat and calories, higher in fibre so your dog still feels fed, and still built on decent ingredients. The list above ranks exactly those foods by our open score. Portion control and treat discipline matter at least as much as which bag you buy.
How do I know if my dog is overweight?
You should be able to feel the ribs easily under a thin layer of fat, see a waist from above, and see the belly tuck up from the side. If you cannot find the ribs without pressing, your dog is carrying too much. Your vet can body-condition score in seconds.
Should I just feed less of the normal food?
It works up to a point, but cutting portions of a rich food also cuts the vitamins and minerals your dog needs. A proper light formula reduces the calories while keeping the nutrition, which is why it is the safer route for anything more than a small adjustment.
