How to choose wet food

Two things to watch. First, the "with beef" trick: under labelling rules that phrase can mean just 4% beef, so a can wearing a steak photo may be mostly unnamed derivatives. We penalise that vagueness hard. Second, cost per day - wet food looks cheap per tray but a 15kg dog can need three or four of them daily, so the real spend is often double an equivalent kibble. Every card below shows the honest price per day.

Plenty of owners split the difference and feed wet alongside dry - a decent tray makes a better topper than most of the products sold as toppers. If your dog is fussy, older, or reluctant to drink, wet food is usually the first sensible move, and the list below is the shortlist we would start with.

Frequently asked questions

Is wet food better than dry food for dogs?

Neither format wins outright - it depends on the label, which is why we score them the same way. Wet foods tend to carry more meat and fewer preservatives; dry is cheaper per day and easier to store. A high-scoring example of either beats a low-scoring example of the other.

What does "with chicken" mean on a wet food label?

Legally, as little as 4% chicken. "Chicken flavour" can mean even less - no actual chicken required. If the label does not declare a real percentage of a named meat, assume the recipe is built on cheaper unnamed ingredients. Our score rewards foods that name and quantify what is inside.

How much wet food does a dog need a day?

Roughly 3-4% of body weight for a typical adult, but it varies with the food's calories and your dog's activity - always check the feeding guide on the food's own page. Each food page here includes a cost calculator that converts the guide into grams and pounds per day for your dog's weight.
