How to choose fresh food

What you are paying for is real. Human-grade ingredients, minimal processing and portioning done for you cost more than a bag of kibble, and the cost per day on each card below is the number to judge - not the weekly subscription price, which is designed to be compared with nothing.

Two practical things. Fresh food needs fridge or freezer space, and a large dog eats a surprising amount of it. And "complete" still matters: some fresh products are complementary, meant to top a bowl rather than fill it, and those are not on this list - it ranks complete diets only.

If the price makes you wince, a good fresh food used as a topper on a high-scoring dry food is a legitimate middle path, and cheaper than switching entirely.

The best fresh foods score very well here because their labels are short, honest and meat-led. But format alone does not decide it - a top kibble beats a mediocre fresh food. The ranking above compares them on ingredients rather than on marketing.

How much does fresh dog food cost per day?

Usually more than dry food, sometimes several times more, and it scales with your dog's size. Every card shows an honest cost per day for a 15kg dog so you can compare like with like instead of comparing subscription plans.

Can I feed fresh food alongside kibble?

Yes, and plenty of owners do exactly that to manage the cost. Use it as part of the daily ration rather than on top of a full bowl, or you will simply be feeding more calories. Adjust the dry portion down accordingly.
