The best air-dried dog food
Auto-ranked by our ODF Score - updated August 19, 2026 . See how we rate
Air-drying removes moisture slowly at low temperature instead of cooking under pressure. What is left is dense, shelf-stable and usually very meat-heavy - closer to raw in composition, but without the freezer or the handling rules.

How to choose air-dried
It is a small category in the UK and a genuinely good one. Recipes are typically short, the meat content is high and declared, and the labels are among the easiest to read on the market, which is why air-dried foods punch above their weight in our scoring.
The catch is price and portion size. Because the water is gone, you feed a startlingly small amount by weight, and the price per kilo looks alarming until you work out the cost per day - which every card below does for you.
It also makes an excellent training treat and an easy way to make a dull bowl interesting, so it is worth knowing about even if you never feed it as a complete diet.
Frequently asked questions
What is air-dried dog food?
Food dried slowly at low temperature to remove moisture, rather than cooked at high heat and pressure like kibble. The result is dense and shelf-stable with a high meat content, and does not need refrigerating.
Is air-dried the same as freeze-dried or raw?
No. Freeze-dried is frozen then vacuum-dried and usually rehydrated before feeding; raw is fed frozen or fresh and needs careful handling. Air-dried sits between them - stable at room temperature and fed as it comes.
Why is air-dried dog food so expensive per kilo?
You are buying food with the water taken out, so a kilo goes much further than a kilo of wet or even dry food. Judge it on the cost per day shown on each card rather than the price on the bag.
