Applaws runs one of the highest declared meat contents of any mainstream brand we track, and its labels are unusually short. Across the 14 foods we have rated it averages 76/100 (Good), ranking 140 of 290.

A dry recipe opening "Chicken 67%, Chicken, Potato Starch, Peas" is close to the top of what a dry food can honestly claim, and the wet - "Chicken Breast 75%, Chicken Broth, Rice" - is a three-ingredient label. There is very little to hide behind, which is the highest compliment we give.

The important caveat is the Taste Toppers range. Those are complementary, not complete - designed to go on top of a meal, not to be one. They sell alongside the complete food in similar packaging, and fed as a sole diet they will not balance a dog. We flag those separately on the site for that reason. The shop shelf will not.

The other caveat is cost. Meat is the expensive part of any recipe, and a range built on this much of it prices accordingly.

The range runs 66 to 82 and its best is Applaws Puppy Large Breed at 82/100. High meat is a real advantage. "Topper" is a real warning.
