Our take on AVA

AVA is Pets at Home's premium own brand, sold on a vet-formulated, breed-and-life-stage story. It is a better food than own-brand instinct suggests, and a more ordinary one than the positioning suggests.

Across the 31 foods we have rated it averages 78/100 (Good), ranking 123 of 304. The strong recipes are genuinely strong - a label opening "Chicken 56.5%, Brown Rice, Maize, Beet Pulp" declares a real, named, measurable amount of chicken, and a lot of pricier brands do not.

What stops it going higher is what comes next. Maize appears through the range, and beet pulp is a cheap bulk fibre doing a job that better ingredients could do. Neither is harmful. Both are the reason the score sits where it does rather than higher.

The breed-specific line deserves the same scepticism we give everyone: a Chihuahua recipe and a Labrador recipe differ mostly in kibble size and calorie density, and those are real but small differences dressed up as a big one.

The range runs 72 to 86 across 14 points, best is Ava Wet Food Adult Sensitive at 86/100, and the cheapest works out around £0.60 a day. Like Wainwright's, it is Pets at Home only - convenient until it is not. Buy the recipe, not the range name.
