Our take on Bug Bakes

Written by us, from the labels. Never written, reviewed or paid for by the brand.

Bug Bakes is a Scottish brand making cold-pressed dog food from insect protein, and it lands mid-table with us. Across 2 rated foods it averages 60/100 (Good), ranking 218 of 304, with Bug Bakes Regular the higher of the two at 60/100.

Two foods is not a range, and our score is a read on the label rather than a verdict on the idea. What the score does not capture is why most people buy this: insect protein is a genuinely novel protein, which is useful if your dog reacts to the usual suspects, and it carries a much smaller environmental footprint than beef or chicken. Those are real reasons and they are not on the label as points.

The cold-pressed format is worth understanding too. It is processed at lower temperatures than extruded kibble and produces a denser pellet that behaves differently in the bowl and in the dog. Some owners switch for that alone.

So: if you are here for the sustainability or for a protein your dog has never met, this is a serious attempt at both and the score says the food is reasonable. If you are simply after the highest-scoring bag for the money, there are dry foods on this site well above this band. Both of those can be true at once.
