Butchers is what an honest budget wet food looks like, and that is worth saying plainly because the category has a bad name it does not always deserve.

Across the 20 foods we have rated it averages 72/100 (Good), ranking 170 of 290. It is mostly tins and trays, it is British-sourced, and it is cheap to feed - around £0.85 a day at the low end.

The thing holding the score down is the phrase "British & Irish Farmed Meats". That is a category term, not an ingredient. It lets the recipe change with supply while the label stays the same, which is a real commercial need and also means you cannot tell whether this week's tin is mostly chicken or mostly something else. We mark that down every time, from every brand, at every price.

Where it does declare properly it does it well - a tray opening "British and Irish Farmed Chicken 51%, Broth 33.5%, Cooked White Rice 12.5%" is a clear, checkable label.

Butchers is owned by Inspired Pet Nutrition, which also owns Harringtons and Wagg. Three brands, one company, three price points - worth knowing when the shelf looks like it offers more choice than it does.
