Our take on Gilpa

Written by us, from the labels. Never written, reviewed or paid for by the brand.

Gilpa is old-school working dog food, and it scores like it. Across 2 rated foods it averages 57/100 (Average), ranking 224 of 290, and the gap between the best and worst is 1 points. On this brand, the choice between bags is about kibble size and your dog's habits, not about quality.

Both rated foods are cereal-based dry mixes built for active and working dogs. That is a design choice rather than a corner cut: cereals are a cheap, digestible energy source, and when you are feeding several working dogs the cost per kilo is a real constraint, not a lifestyle preference. It caps the score, because our system credits meat content and named ingredients, but it does not make the food dishonest.

The company is Gilbertson & Page in Hertfordshire, which has been making dog food since 1873 and has held a Royal Warrant since 1884. That is not a nutritional argument - plenty of very old recipes deserve retiring - but it does mean this is a manufacturer with its own name on the bag rather than an anonymous own-label.

Cost is around £0.29 a day for the cheapest option.

Fair value for what it is. If you are feeding one pet dog rather than a kennel, there are higher-scoring dry foods at a similar price per day worth comparing first.
