Our take on Greenwoods

Written by us, from the labels. Never written, reviewed or paid for by the brand.

Greenwoods sounds like a Cotswolds farm shop and is in fact a German brand, made by a Munich producer and sold only through zooplus and bitiba. Worth knowing before you go looking for it anywhere else.

Across 8 rated foods it averages 70/100 (Good), ranking 183 of 304 brands, with a spread of only 37 points between the wet and the dry. Greenwoods Dry leads at 83/100. Both rated recipes are grain free and both are complete foods.

The interesting part of the range is insect protein - black soldier fly larvae as the main animal ingredient rather than chicken or beef. Our score treats it as what it is, a named single-source animal protein with a declared percentage, and it does well on that basis. For dogs with reactions to the common meats it is a genuinely novel protein, and the environmental argument for it is stronger than for most things marketed as sustainable. If your dog turns their nose up at it, that is a fair outcome too.

Being retailer-exclusive cuts both ways. Pricing tends to be keen because there is no distributor margin in the chain, but availability lives and dies with one retailer's stock levels, and a food your dog has settled on can simply stop being listed.

Solid scores, an unusual protein, and a supply chain you should be aware of. Check the individual recipe page before switching.
