Optimum Pet is one of the better value propositions we have rated: 80/100 (Very good) across 15 foods, with the cheapest running about £0.61 a day. Good scores at that price are not common.

The range spans 72 to 84, a spread of 12 points, and ranks 111 of 304. Its best, Optimum Pet Health Puppy Cans, takes 84/100.

Nothing unusual is happening in the recipes - named meat, declared percentages, sensible carbohydrates, no obvious padding. That is the whole trick. Most of what separates a good label from a poor one is not exotic ingredients, it is the manufacturer choosing to say what is in the bag.
