Our take on Rathlin Raw

Written by us, from the labels. Never written, reviewed or paid for by the brand.

Rathlin Raw has the tightest scoring range on this site. Across 3 rated foods it averages 89/100 (Very good), ranking 10 of 290, with a spread of only 1 point from bottom to top. Everything they make scores the same, and what they make scores very well.

Raw food tends to do this. When a recipe is meat, bone and offal in declared proportions plus some vegetables, there is very little on the label for our score to object to - no vague category terms, no artificial additives, nothing standing in for meat. Rathlin Raw Chicken and Green Tripe is nominally the best at 90/100, but the difference is not meaningful.

The important caveat is not about quality. Most of this range is complementary rather than complete, which means it is not formulated to be your dog's only food. An eighty-ten-ten recipe is muscle meat, bone and offal - excellent raw material, but it is not carrying a full vitamin and mineral profile on its own. If you feed it as the whole diet without balancing it across the week, you can end up short on things that matter. Check which product you are buying.

The other practical points with raw: it needs freezer space, it needs sensible handling in the kitchen, and it costs more than kibble per day. Those are the real reasons people do or do not feed raw, and the score does not measure any of them.

Very good food. Just be clear which of the three you are putting in the bowl, and whether it is meant to be the whole meal.
