Our take on Red Mills
Written by us, from the labels. Never written, reviewed or paid for by the brand.
Red Mills is Irish, not British - a family milling business in Co. Kilkenny that is far better known for horse feed than dog food, and the dog range reflects that heritage. These are greyhound and working-dog feeds, sold by the sack to people feeding kennels.
We need to be straight with you about the numbers on this page. Across 1 rated foods the scores run from 53 to 53, and a score at the very bottom of our scale usually means our label data is incomplete rather than that we have examined a food and found nothing in it. Until we have re-checked that recipe, the brand average of 53/100 is being dragged by something we cannot yet stand behind. Treat it as flagged, not as a verdict.
What we can say is about the food we do hold properly. Red Mills Racer Plus scores 53/100, which is mid-table. Neither rated food is grain free, and cereal-led formulation is the main thing holding the score where it is. For a racing or working dog burning through calories, cheap digestible energy is the design goal, not an oversight.
This is a category where price per kilo does most of the deciding, and being sniffy about that helps nobody feeding a kennel. The comparison that actually helps is against other working-dog feeds at a similar cost, which is what the alternatives below are for.
We will update this page once the missing label data is in. If you feed Red Mills and can read the panel off a current bag, we would genuinely like to hear from you.
