Skinner's has fed British working dogs for decades, and Field & Trial is one of the few ranges where the working-dog label means something specific rather than decorative.

Across the 37 foods we have rated it averages 60/100 (Good), ranking 215 of 304. It is affordable to run - roughly £0.28 a day at the cheap end - and the recipes are straightforward.

The score is held back by protein naming. "Poultry Meat Meal 31%" tells you the quantity, which is good, and refuses to tell you the species, which is not. Poultry could be chicken, turkey, duck, or a mix that changes between batches. For most dogs that is irrelevant. For a dog with a suspected chicken sensitivity it is the only thing that matters, and that is precisely the case where a working-dog food often gets recommended.

Where it names things it scores better - a wet recipe opening "Chicken 60%, Carrot 3.5%, Potato 3.5%, Parsnip 3%" is clear and good.

One practical note: working-dog food is zero-rated for VAT, which is why it can look oddly cheap next to comparable bags. That is a tax rule about the dog, not a quality signal about the food.
