Our take on Yora

Written by us, from the labels. Never written, reviewed or paid for by the brand.

Yora was the brand that brought insect protein to the UK mainstream, and it deserves credit for that regardless of how it scores.

8 rated foods averaging 72/100 (Good), running 37 to 78 - a spread of 41 points - ranking 165 of 290. Yora First Steps leads at 78/100.

The environmental case is genuinely strong. Black soldier fly larvae are farmed on food waste, reach harvest in about two weeks, and use a fraction of the land and water conventional livestock needs.

The nutritional case is less settled than the marketing suggests, and we would rather say so. Insect protein itself is complete and highly digestible and rates well with us - but the rest of the recipe still has to hold up, and across the insect category as a whole the scores sit below the catalogue average. Our insect protein guide sets out both halves.

Cost is around £1.13 a day at the cheapest. Buy it for the environmental argument, which is real; do not assume it automatically buys better nutrition.
