Plain beetroot contains nothing toxic to dogs. It carries fibre, folate, manganese and potassium, and a small amount of cooked beetroot is a perfectly reasonable addition to a bowl. The thing worth knowing before you feed it is cosmetic but alarming: the pigment that makes beetroot red passes straight through, so many dogs produce reddish urine or stools for a day afterwards. Owners routinely mistake this for blood and have a very bad evening. It is harmless and passes. Beyond that, beetroot is moderately high in oxalates, which is a reason to avoid it in dogs with kidney or bladder stone history, and it is higher in natural sugar than most vegetables. Pickled beetroot, which is what most British households actually have, is soaked in vinegar and salt and should not be shared.
How much is safe?
A teaspoon of cooked chopped beetroot for a small dog, up to a couple of tablespoons for a large one, occasionally. Raw beetroot is very hard and is better cooked and softened first.
How to prepare it
Fresh beetroot, peeled, boiled or steamed until soft, cooled and chopped or grated. No vinegar, no salt, no pickling. Never share beetroot from a jar.
Symptoms to watch for
Red urine or stools, which is harmless. Loose stools if too much is given. Genuine problems are limited to dogs with a stone history, where oxalates matter, and would show as straining or blood in the urine.

If your dog strains to urinate or you are genuinely unsure whether red urine is pigment or blood - that is a reasonable thing to have checked rather than guessed.
