What happens
Chives contain the same organosulphur compounds as onions, garlic and leeks. In dogs these damage red blood cells by oxidising the haemoglobin inside them, and the body then clears the damaged cells faster than it can make new ones, causing haemolytic anaemia. Chives are worth singling out because of where they hide. They are chopped into cream cheese, sour cream dips, mashed potato, omelettes and jacket potatoes, and scattered over food as a garnish - none of which reads as an onion dish to the person sharing it. The quantities involved are usually small, which matters less than it sounds because allium damage is cumulative: a little in a dip on Saturday and a little on a baked potato on Sunday both count. Chives also grow in a lot of gardens and herb pots, where a curious dog can graze on them.
