In moderation - cinnamon is not toxic to dogs, but it irritates the mouth and stomach in any real quantity, and the products it comes in are usually the actual problem.
What happens
Cinnamon is not poisonous to dogs, which is worth saying plainly because it appears on a lot of scaremongering lists. A dusting is harmless. What it is, though, is an irritant: a meaningful quantity of powder irritates the mouth and digestive tract, causing drooling and vomiting, and inhaled powder makes dogs cough and can irritate the airways. Cinnamon oil is far more concentrated and should be kept away entirely. The cassia cinnamon sold in most British supermarkets also contains coumarin, which affects the liver in large sustained doses - not a worry from a sprinkle, but a reason not to make it a daily supplement. In practice the real hazards are the vehicles: cinnamon buns, gingerbread and festive baking bring sugar, butter, raisins and sometimes nutmeg, which is toxic.
How much is safe?
A small pinch for a large dog, occasionally, and no more. There is no established benefit that justifies feeding it deliberately.
How to prepare it
A pinch of ground cinnamon stirred into food at most. Never cinnamon oil, never cinnamon sticks to chew, and nothing baked - buns, biscuits and cakes bring sugar, raisins and often nutmeg.
Symptoms to watch for
Drooling, mouth irritation, vomiting or diarrhoea from too much powder. Coughing and wheezing if powder is inhaled. Low blood sugar has been reported with large ingestions, which needs a vet.
When to call the vet
If your dog has eaten a large amount of powder, ingested cinnamon oil, or eaten festive baking that may have contained raisins or nutmeg.
