Can dogs eat Coconut?

Coconut flesh contains nothing poisonous to dogs, and a small piece is unlikely to cause more than mild stomach upset. What makes it a caution is the fat. Coconut is exceptionally high in fat, mostly saturated, and a sudden quantity is exactly the sort of thing that triggers pancreatitis in a susceptible dog. Coconut oil, which is often promoted for dogs' coats, is pure fat and calories, and the evidence for the benefits is much weaker than the marketing suggests. Coconut water is high in potassium and is not a suitable drink for a dog with any kidney or heart condition. The most immediate danger is physical: shell and husk fragments are hard, sharp and indigestible, and are a real choking and blockage risk.
How much is safe?
A small piece of fresh flesh or a pinch of unsweetened desiccated coconut, occasionally. If you are using coconut oil, think in terms of a quarter of a teaspoon rather than spoonfuls, and only after talking to your vet.
How to prepare it
Fresh white flesh in small pieces, or unsweetened desiccated coconut. Never the shell or husk. Never sweetened coconut, coconut in a chocolate bar, or anything from a bag of sweetened flakes.
Symptoms to watch for
Loose or greasy stools and vomiting from too much fat. The pancreatitis warning signs are a hunched back, repeated retching and refusing food. Shell fragments cause gagging, drooling, retching or a painful, tender belly.
When to call the vet
Straight away if your dog has swallowed shell or husk. Same-day if there is repeated vomiting and clear abdominal pain after a fatty meal.
