What happens
Plain cranberries contain nothing harmful to dogs. They are low in calories, high in fibre and antioxidants, and a few are a perfectly reasonable treat, though most dogs find them far too sour to be interested. The processed versions are where the problems start. Dried cranberries are heavily sweetened and often packed alongside raisins or sultanas, which are toxic to dogs - a handful of mixed dried fruit is a genuine risk. Cranberry sauce is mostly sugar. Cranberry juice drinks are sugar and sometimes sweetener. It is also worth being clear about the urinary-tract claim: the evidence that cranberry prevents urinary infections in dogs is weak, and a dog with urinary symptoms needs a vet, not a fruit.
How much is safe?
Two or three berries for a small dog, a small handful for a large one, occasionally. Fibre-rich fruit in quantity means loose stools, and there is no benefit to feeding more.

Fresh or plain frozen only, washed, and chopped or mashed for small dogs. Nothing dried, nothing juiced, nothing in sauce, and nothing from a bag of mixed dried fruit.
Symptoms to watch for
Too many usually means an upset stomach or diarrhoea. The serious scenario is dried mixed fruit: if raisins or sultanas were in the packet, that is a raisin exposure and needs treating as such.
