Mangetout - the flat pods you eat whole, tiny peas and all - are a safe, light treat for dogs. Like their cousins the garden pea and the sugar snap, they carry fibre, vitamin C and a little plant protein for very few calories, and the crunch makes them surprisingly popular. Because the whole pod is eaten, there is no shelling to do and nothing to remove. The only real watch-out is how they usually leave our kitchens - tossed through stir-fries with garlic, onion, salt and soy sauce, none of which is for dogs.
How much is safe?
A few pods for a small dog and a small handful for a large one is a good treat portion. They are low in calories, so you have some leeway, but introduce them gradually so the extra fibre does not surprise a sensitive stomach.
How to prepare it
Wash them and serve them raw, steamed or blanched, chopped to a size your dog can manage. Keep them plain - no salt, oil, butter or sauces, and never from a stir-fry that included onion or garlic.
Symptoms to watch for
Very few problems. A big pile of pods can cause wind or a loose stool. Whole pods can be a choking risk for tiny dogs and gulpers, so chop them for the little ones.
When to call the vet
Rarely needed. If stomach upset follows a big helping and does not settle within a day, or a small dog chokes on a whole pod, contact your vet. Otherwise mangetout are about as low-risk as treats get.
