Peanuts are not toxic to dogs - they are technically a legume rather than a true nut, which is why they escape the blanket no that covers macadamias. Plain, unsalted peanuts in small numbers are fine for most dogs. The trouble starts with everything we do to them: salt, flavourings, honey coatings and chocolate all turn a harmless snack into a bad idea, and the natural fat content means even plain peanuts add up quickly. Mouldy peanuts are a separate hazard, as they can carry aflatoxin, a mould toxin that damages the liver.
How much is safe?
A few plain peanuts now and then is the sensible ceiling - one or two for a small dog, a small palmful at most for a big one. They are fatty and calorie-dense, so they should stay an occasional treat rather than a daily habit.
How to prepare it
Offer plain, unsalted, shelled peanuts only, a few at a time. Skip salted, dry-roasted, honey-roast, flavoured and chocolate-coated peanuts entirely, and never feed anything old or mouldy. A smear of xylitol-free peanut butter is often an easier way to give the same flavour.
Symptoms to watch for
Too many peanuts, or a fatty binge, can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and, in some dogs, pancreatitis - look for repeated vomiting, a painful belly and lethargy. Salted kinds add excessive thirst, and whole nuts can be a choking risk for small dogs.

If your dog eats a large amount, especially salted or coated peanuts, watch for repeated vomiting, a painful belly or lethargy and call your vet if they appear. Mouldy peanuts scavenged from a bin or under a bird feeder are worth a call in their own right.
