In moderation - plantain must be cooked, because raw plantain is very starchy and hard for a dog to digest. Fried plantain is not suitable at all.
What happens
Plantain is not toxic to dogs, but it is not a banana either, and that is the confusion worth clearing up. It is far starchier and less sweet, and raw plantain is difficult for a dog to digest, commonly causing wind, bloating and loose stools. Cooked plainly - boiled, steamed or baked - it becomes much more digestible and provides fibre, potassium and vitamins A and C. It remains high in starch and calories, so portions should be small, particularly for an overweight dog. The way plantain is normally eaten is the bigger issue: fried plantain is cooked in a great deal of oil and often salted or sweetened, which makes it a poor idea for any dog and a genuine pancreatitis risk for a susceptible one. The skin should always be removed.
How much is safe?
A small piece of cooked plantain for a small dog, a couple of slices for a large one, occasionally. It is starchy, so count it within the daily calories.
How to prepare it
Peel it, boil, steam or bake it plain until soft, cool it and cut it into small pieces. Never raw, never fried, never with sugar, salt or spices.
Symptoms to watch for
Raw plantain typically causes wind, bloating and loose stools. Fried plantain can cause vomiting and, in a susceptible dog, the hunched posture and repeated retching of pancreatitis.
When to call the vet
If your dog has eaten a quantity of fried plantain and is vomiting repeatedly or seems in pain. Otherwise only for diarrhoea that does not settle.
