Rosemary is one of the herbs you will already be feeding your dog without realising it: rosemary extract is a common natural antioxidant used to keep fats in dog food from going rancid, and it appears on plenty of ingredient lists. In culinary amounts the fresh or dried herb is not toxic. It contains antioxidants and has a mild antimicrobial reputation. The caution worth knowing is about concentration rather than the herb itself. Rosemary essential oil is far stronger than the leaf and should not be given internally or applied undiluted, and there is a long-standing debate about whether high doses of rosemary could lower the seizure threshold in epileptic dogs. The evidence is thin either way, but if your dog has epilepsy it is a reasonable thing to raise with your vet.
How much is safe?
A pinch of finely chopped fresh or dried rosemary for a small dog, up to half a teaspoon for a large one, occasionally. The needles are tough, so chop them finely.
How to prepare it
Fresh leaves stripped from the stem and finely chopped, or a pinch of dried. Never a whole sprig, never the essential oil, and nothing from a roast dinner cooked with garlic and oil.
Symptoms to watch for
Rarely anything at culinary levels. A large amount of the woody herb can cause stomach upset, and whole sprigs are a choking risk. Essential oil exposure can cause drooling, vomiting and wobbliness.
When to call the vet
If your dog has ingested rosemary essential oil, or if you have an epileptic dog and are considering using rosemary regularly - ask before, not after.
