Spinach carries plenty of vitamins A, C and K, iron and fibre, and a small amount will not hurt a healthy dog. It is in the caution column for one specific reason: oxalic acid. Oxalates bind calcium and, in large or regular quantities, may contribute to kidney and bladder stone problems in dogs predisposed to them. For a healthy dog eating a spoonful occasionally this is a theoretical concern rather than a practical one. For a dog with kidney disease or a history of calcium oxalate stones it is a genuine reason to leave spinach out altogether. Raw spinach is also bulky and harder to digest, and a large quantity can simply cause wind and loose stools.
How much is safe?
A teaspoon of chopped cooked spinach for a small dog, up to a couple of tablespoons for a large one, occasionally rather than daily. Dogs get everything they need from a complete food, so this is a garnish, not a supplement.
How to prepare it
Steam or boil it plain and chop it finely, which makes it far easier to digest than raw leaves. No butter, no oil, no salt, no garlic. Never creamed spinach, which is usually made with onion or garlic and a lot of dairy.
Symptoms to watch for
Overdoing it usually means wind, gurgling or loose stools. Oxalate-related problems are long term rather than immediate, and would show as straining to urinate, blood in the urine or frequent small wees - all of which need a vet.

If your dog strains to urinate, produces blood in the urine, or wees little and often. Also check with your vet before feeding spinach at all if your dog has any kidney or urinary history.
