Eukanuba sells on performance - working dogs, athletic dogs, dogs that look like they have somewhere to be. The labels are more ordinary than the photography.

Across the 104 foods we have rated it averages 69/100 (Good), ranking 187 of 304. Every Eukanuba food we track is dry, which at least makes the range easy to compare with itself.

The recurring pattern is cereal placed high. A bag opening "Fresh Chicken, Dried Chicken & Turkey 17%, Maize, Wheat, Oats" reads well for two ingredients and then arrives at maize and wheat quickly. "Fresh Chicken" listed first is also worth understanding: fresh meat is weighed with its water still in it, so it looks larger on the list than it is in the finished kibble. Once that water cooks off, the dried portion - here declared at 17% - is closer to what your dog is actually eating. That is legal, everybody does it, and it is the single most useful label trick to know.

Priced against the mid-market it competes with, we do not think the recipes justify the position. Priced against a supermarket bag, they clearly do.

The range runs 38 to 84, a spread of 46 points, and its best here is Eukanuba Special Care Puppy Sensitive Digestion at 84/100. Read the percentage, not the picture.
