Celery is about as harmless as a vegetable gets. It is roughly 95 per cent water, extremely low in calories, and carries some fibre, vitamin K and potassium. That makes it a useful treat for a dog on a diet, since it adds crunch and bulk without much energy. There is nothing toxic in it. The only genuine risks are mechanical: celery is fibrous and stringy, and a dog that bolts a whole stick can choke or end up with strands caught around the base of the tongue. It is also mildly diuretic in quantity, so a dog that eats a lot may need to go out more than usual - harmless, but worth knowing before you fill a bowl with it.
How much is safe?
A few small chunks for a small dog, a handful for a large one. It is so light that calories are rarely the constraint, but as with any fibrous vegetable, a large quantity means wind.
How to prepare it
Wash it, trim the base and leaves, and cut it into short pieces across the stalk rather than lengthways - that breaks up the strings. Raw is fine and most dogs prefer the crunch; steaming softens it for older mouths. No salt, no dip, nothing from a cheese board.
