What happens
Lettuce contains nothing that will harm a dog. It is mostly water and fibre, which makes it a genuinely zero-guilt treat for a dog on a diet, and many dogs enjoy the crunch of a cold leaf on a hot day. It is worth being honest that it does very little else: iceberg in particular is around 96 per cent water with minimal nutritional value, and darker leaves such as romaine carry a bit more vitamin A and K but still nothing your dog needs. The two things to watch are washing, since bagged salad leaves have been implicated in bacterial contamination and a dog is no more immune to that than you are, and dressing - a salad is only harmless until someone adds oil, salt, blue cheese or onion.
How much is safe?
A leaf or two for a small dog and a few for a large one. It is so low in calories that quantity is rarely the issue, though a lot of any fibrous green means loose stools.
How to prepare it
Wash it thoroughly, tear or chop it into pieces, and serve it plain. Raw is fine. No dressing, no croutons, no cheese, and nothing from a salad that has had onion in it.
Symptoms to watch for
Usually nothing whatsoever. A large amount can cause mild diarrhoea. Large unchewed leaves can occasionally cause gagging in a dog that swallows things whole.
When to call the vet
Very rarely needed - only for persistent diarrhoea, or if your dog has eaten a dressed salad containing onion.
