Can dogs eat Honey?

What happens
Honey is not toxic to dogs, and a small amount will not do a healthy adult any harm. It is also not the medicine the internet suggests: the claims about honey curing allergies do not hold up well, and a dog does not need it for anything. What it definitely is, is sugar. Regular honey adds empty calories, contributes to weight gain and is not helpful for teeth. For a diabetic dog it is genuinely risky because of the sudden effect on blood sugar. Raw honey can also contain botulism spores, which is why it is not recommended for puppies or for dogs with a compromised immune system, in the same way it is avoided for human infants.
How much is safe?
Somewhere between a quarter and a full teaspoon depending on your dog's size, and only occasionally. It is easiest to think of honey as a delivery mechanism for tablets or a rare lick from a spoon, rather than as a regular addition to food.
How to prepare it
Plain honey straight from the jar, in a very small amount. There is no need to warm, dilute or mix it. Never give honey-flavoured products, which are usually mostly syrup, and never assume a honey-sweetened yoghurt is safe.
Symptoms to watch for
Too much shows up as an upset stomach or loose stools. Over time, regular honey means weight gain and dental problems. In a diabetic dog it can cause a dangerous blood sugar spike.
When to call the vet
Ring your vet if a diabetic dog has eaten honey, or if a puppy has had raw honey and seems weak or unsteady. Otherwise a small amount needs no action.

Does honey help dogs with allergies?
The idea is that local pollen in honey desensitises a dog to it, but the evidence for this in dogs is weak. If your dog has allergies, that is a conversation with your vet rather than a reason to add sugar to the bowl.
Can puppies have honey?
Better not. Raw honey can contain botulism spores, which a very young or immune-compromised animal may not handle well - the same reason honey is avoided for human babies. There is no nutritional need for it either way.
Is honey good for a dog's cough?
A little honey may soothe a mildly irritated throat, but a cough in a dog can mean anything from kennel cough to heart disease. Treat the symptom at home only after a vet has told you what is causing it.
