Plain live yoghurt is one of the more useful dairy products for a dog. The fermentation breaks down some of the lactose, so it tends to be better tolerated than milk, and the live cultures are the reason people use it as a home-made probiotic. Most dogs handle a spoonful without trouble. Two things make it a caution rather than a yes. Dogs are, to varying degrees, lactose intolerant after puppyhood, so some will get wind or loose stools from any dairy. Far more seriously, flavoured, diet and sugar-free yoghurts may be sweetened with xylitol, which is extremely toxic to dogs even in tiny amounts. Always read the label before a yoghurt pot goes anywhere near your dog.
How much is safe?
A teaspoon for a small dog and up to a tablespoon or two for a large one, a few times a week. Introduce it with a small amount first and see how your dog handles it before making it a habit.
How to prepare it
Plain, natural, full-fat or low-fat yoghurt with nothing else in it. Check the ingredients for sweeteners every single time. Never give flavoured, fruit, honey-sweetened, diet or sugar-free yoghurt. A small spoonful stirred into food, or frozen in an enrichment toy, works well.
Symptoms to watch for
Lactose trouble shows as wind, gurgling or loose stools within a day. Xylitol poisoning is a different order of emergency: weakness, wobbliness, collapse or seizures, sometimes within half an hour, caused by a sudden crash in blood sugar.
When to call the vet
Immediately, without waiting for symptoms, if the yoghurt contained xylitol - this is a genuine emergency. Otherwise, only if diarrhoea persists beyond a day or so.

Is Greek yoghurt safe for dogs?
Plain Greek yoghurt is fine in small amounts and is often better tolerated because it is lower in lactose. It must be the plain, unsweetened kind - check that the ingredients list contains nothing but milk and cultures.
Can yoghurt help a dog's digestion?
Live yoghurt contains beneficial bacteria and some owners find a spoonful helps. It is not a substitute for a proper veterinary probiotic if your dog has ongoing digestive trouble, and persistent problems need investigating rather than managing with a dairy product.
Which yoghurts are dangerous for dogs?
Anything sugar-free, diet or low-calorie, because those may be sweetened with xylitol, which is extremely toxic to dogs. Flavoured and fruit yoghurts are also best avoided for their sugar content. Read the label every time.
