Plain oat milk is one of the gentler milk alternatives for dogs, since it contains no lactose and no dairy, and a small amount will not harm most of them. The serious risk hides in the sweetened versions. Some sweetened and flavoured plant milks use xylitol, a sugar substitute that is extremely toxic to dogs and can cause a life-threatening blood sugar crash within minutes. Barista, flavoured and protein versions also add oils, sugar and salt a dog has no use for, so the plain carton is the only one that even qualifies for a splash.
How much is safe?
A small splash of plain, unsweetened oat milk as an occasional thing is the sensible limit. It offers a dog nothing that water and a balanced diet do not, so there is no reason to make it a habit.

If you offer any, use a small splash of plain, unsweetened, unflavoured oat milk from a label you have actually read. Never share sweetened, flavoured, barista or protein versions, and treat anything listing xylitol or birch sugar as a poison, not a drink.
Symptoms to watch for
Plain oat milk in excess can cause a loose stool, as it is still a processed, mildly sugary liquid. If a xylitol-sweetened drink is involved, signs are fast and serious - weakness, wobbliness, vomiting, collapse or seizures within minutes to an hour. That is an emergency.
When to call the vet
If your dog drinks anything sweetened with xylitol, contact your vet or an emergency line immediately - do not wait for symptoms. For plain oat milk, a vet call is only needed if stomach upset is severe or lasts more than a day.
