Plain cooked pork is a perfectly usable protein for dogs, and it even features in some commercial dog foods. The cautions are all about form. Raw or undercooked pork can carry parasites, so it must always be cooked through. The fat is rich, and pork crackling, fatty trimmings and cooking juices are classic triggers for stomach upset and pancreatitis. And most of the pork in our kitchens is processed - bacon, sausages, ham and gammon are heavily salted and often seasoned, which rules them out as treats.
How much is safe?
A small piece of plain, lean, cooked pork occasionally is the sensible limit - a bite or two for a small dog, a little more for a large one. Trim the fat, skip the crackling, and keep it well within the daily treat allowance.
How to prepare it
Cook plain pork thoroughly with no salt, seasoning, glaze or sauce, trim off the visible fat, and cut it small. No crackling, no bones, no gravy. If it came seasoned, brined or cured, it is not for the dog.
Symptoms to watch for
Fatty pork can cause vomiting, diarrhoea or pancreatitis - repeated vomiting, a painful belly and lethargy are the warning signs. Undercooked pork risks parasitic infection, and salty processed pork causes excessive thirst and worse in quantity. Cooked pork bones splinter and must never be given.
When to call the vet
If your dog eats raw pork, a large amount of fatty pork or crackling, or a cooked pork bone, contact your vet. Repeated vomiting, a painful belly, lethargy or straining afterwards are all signs that need prompt attention.

Can dogs eat sausages?
It is best not to. Sausages are processed pork with a lot of salt and fat, and many contain onion or garlic in the seasoning. A tiny bit as a rare training bribe will not kill a healthy dog, but they should never be a regular treat.
