A small cooked portion once or twice a week is a sensible ceiling - a forkful for a small dog, more for a large one. Salmon is rich and calorie-dense, so it is a treat or a meal topper, not a daily staple, unless it comes as part of a complete dog food.
How to prepare it
Bake, steam or poach it plain, with no oil, salt, butter or seasoning, and check carefully for bones before serving. Skip smoked salmon, which is heavily salted and not fully cooked, and skip cured or sushi-style raw salmon entirely.
Symptoms to watch for
Overdoing rich salmon can cause an upset stomach or, in susceptible dogs, pancreatitis. After raw salmon, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, swollen glands and lethargy over the following days - signs that need urgent attention. A bone can lodge in the mouth or throat.
