A cooked egg is close to the perfect protein - digestible, packed with amino acids, vitamins and minerals, and most dogs think it is wonderful, which is why egg turns up in plenty of good dog foods. Cooking matters though. Raw eggs carry a salmonella risk, and raw egg white contains avidin, a protein that interferes with the uptake of biotin, one of the B vitamins, if raw eggs are fed regularly over time. Cooking removes both concerns.
How much is safe?
A whole egg is a decent portion for a medium or large dog, and half is plenty for a small one, a few times a week at most. Eggs are calorie-dense, so count them towards the treat allowance rather than adding them on top of full meals every day.
How to prepare it
Boil, poach or scramble the egg plain - no butter, oil, salt, milk or seasoning. Let it cool and chop it for small dogs. Cooked crushed shell is not toxic but adds little, so most owners skip it. Never serve eggs raw, and skip anything fried.
Symptoms to watch for
Cooked plain eggs rarely cause trouble beyond a bit of wind in some dogs. Raw eggs risk salmonella - vomiting, diarrhoea and fever - and a long-running raw-egg habit can in theory cause a biotin shortfall that shows up in the skin and coat.
