They are a source of soluble fibre, they are gentle on the digestion, and plain porridge is often suggested as part of a bland diet for a dog recovering from an upset stomach. Cooked with water and served plain, there is nothing to worry about. The problems are all in the additions. Milk causes wind and loose stools in lactose-intolerant dogs, which is most adult dogs to some degree. Sugar, syrup and honey add empty calories. Raisins are toxic to dogs and appear in a lot of breakfast oat products, and some flavoured instant oats contain xylitol, which is dangerous even in small amounts. Read the sachet before sharing.
How much is safe?
A tablespoon or two of cooked plain porridge for a small dog, up to about a quarter of a cup for a large one, occasionally. It is carbohydrate, so it counts within the daily calories rather than being free.
How to prepare it
Plain rolled or porridge oats cooked in water, with nothing added - no milk, no sugar, no syrup, no salt, no butter. Let it cool to room temperature. Never share porridge containing raisins, and never a sugar-free flavoured sachet.
Symptoms to watch for
Plain porridge rarely causes anything beyond wind if a lot is eaten at once. Milky or sweetened porridge is more likely to cause loose stools. Raisins or xylitol in a flavoured product are a different and urgent matter.
When to call the vet
Immediately if the porridge contained raisins or a sugar-free sweetener. Otherwise only if digestive upset lasts more than a day.
