Dogs adore sausages, which is precisely why they cause so much trouble. A British sausage is not simply meat: it is meat plus rusk, a lot of fat and a lot of salt, and the seasoning mix very often includes onion or garlic powder, both of which are toxic to dogs and more concentrated in powdered form than fresh. The fat content alone is a well-known trigger for pancreatitis, and barbecue season reliably fills veterinary waiting rooms for exactly this reason. Raw sausage meat brings an additional problem: sulphite preservatives used in some raw sausages and sausage meat have been linked to thiamine deficiency in dogs when fed regularly, which is a genuine and serious condition.
How much is safe?
There is no portion that is actively good. If you are sharing a barbecue, a small piece of plain cooked sausage occasionally will not hurt a healthy dog, but a whole sausage is a lot of salt and fat for a small animal.
How to prepare it
If you want to give your dog sausage-like food, plain cooked meat with nothing added is the version to give - and at that point it is simply cooked meat, which is what your dog wanted anyway. Never raw sausage meat, never sausages from a barbecue with the skin charred and salted, never anything in a bun.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting and diarrhoea are the common outcomes. A hunched back, repeated retching and refusing food after a fatty meal suggest pancreatitis and need same-day attention. Onion or garlic effects appear more slowly as lethargy, weakness or pale gums.

Same-day if your dog is repeatedly vomiting, hunched or in pain after eating fatty food. Ring for advice if a whole packet has been eaten, especially raw sausage meat.
