Beef is a high-quality protein that dogs digest well, and it is one of the most widely used meats in complete dog food. Plain cooked beef causes no problems for most dogs. Two things are worth knowing. First, fat: fatty cuts, trimmings and pan fat are a common trigger for pancreatitis, and a dog that raids the Sunday roast trimmings can end up genuinely ill. Second, allergies: beef is one of the proteins most often implicated in confirmed food reactions in dogs, alongside dairy and chicken. If your dog is itchy or has a permanently unsettled stomach on a beef-based food, that is worth investigating rather than ignoring.
How much is safe?
A few small cubes for a small dog, a small handful for a large one, keeping all treats under about a tenth of daily calories. Lean cuts only - trim the fat off rather than handing it over.
How to prepare it
Cook it plain - boiled, grilled or baked with nothing added. No salt, no marinade, no onion or garlic. Trim off the fat, drain it, cool it and cut it into sensible pieces. Mince is fine if it is drained properly.
Symptoms to watch for
Rich or fatty beef usually shows up as vomiting or diarrhoea. The warning signs of pancreatitis are a hunched posture, repeated retching, refusing food and obvious discomfort. A food allergy looks different and slower: itchy skin, recurring ear trouble or long-running loose stools.

Same-day if your dog is repeatedly vomiting, hunched or in pain after a fatty meal. Book a normal appointment if you suspect a beef allergy - do not try to diagnose it by guesswork, because an elimination diet only works if it is done properly.
