Chicken is lean, highly digestible and packed with the protein a dog is built to use, which is why vets so often suggest plain boiled chicken and rice for a dog recovering from an upset stomach. Nothing in plain cooked chicken is a problem for a healthy dog. The trouble only ever comes from what we do to it: the skin is fatty enough to trigger a bout of pancreatitis in a susceptible dog, roast chicken is usually seasoned with salt and often cooked with onion or garlic, and cooked bones splinter. Chicken is also one of the most common food allergens in dogs, so a dog with itchy skin or a rumbling gut that eats chicken daily is worth a conversation with your vet.
How much is safe?
Treats of any kind should stay under about a tenth of your dog's daily calories. A few small pieces for a little dog, a handful of shredded meat for a big one, is plenty as a snack. Used as a bland meal during recovery the quantity is different and your vet should set it.
How to prepare it
Boil, poach or bake it plain. No salt, no oil, no garlic or onion, no stuffing, no gravy. Take the skin off, take every bone out, and shred or chop it. Let it cool. Leftover takeaway or rotisserie chicken is not the same thing and is usually far too salty.
Symptoms to watch for
Plain chicken rarely causes problems. Rich, skin-on or heavily seasoned chicken can bring on vomiting, diarrhoea or, in the worst case, the hunched posture and repeated retching of pancreatitis. If your dog eats cooked bones, watch for gagging, drooling, straining or a hard belly.
When to call the vet
Call your vet if your dog has swallowed cooked bones, or if vomiting and diarrhoea last more than a day. Repeated vomiting with a tucked-up, painful abdomen after a fatty meal needs same-day attention.

Can dogs eat raw chicken?
Raw feeding is a legitimate approach, but raw chicken carries salmonella and campylobacter risk for both your dog and your household, and needs proper sourcing and handling. It is a considered decision to make with your vet, not something to try with a supermarket pack on a whim.
Can dogs eat chicken bones?
Never cooked ones. Cooking makes bone brittle, so it splinters into sharp fragments that can pierce the gut. Raw bones behave differently but still carry choking and blockage risk. If your dog has eaten cooked bones, ring your vet.
Is chicken good for a dog with an upset stomach?
Plain boiled chicken with white rice is the classic bland meal for exactly that reason - it is gentle and easy to digest. Use it short term while symptoms settle, and see your vet if things do not improve within a day or two.
