What happens
Ice cream is a bad idea dressed up as a kindness. Most adult dogs are lactose intolerant to some degree, so dairy this concentrated commonly causes wind, gurgling and loose stools. It is also very high in sugar and fat, which means weight gain if it becomes a habit, and a real pancreatitis risk in susceptible dogs. Then there are the flavours that are outright dangerous: chocolate is toxic, coffee flavours contain caffeine, macadamia and raisin varieties bring their own poisons, and any sugar-free or diet ice cream may be sweetened with xylitol, which can be fatal in small quantities. On a hot day, a frozen dog-safe treat does the same job with none of this.
How much is safe?
If you are going to share, a single small lick of plain vanilla is the ceiling, and even that is best treated as a rare indulgence rather than a summer routine. There is no amount that is actively good for your dog.
How to prepare it
The better answer is not to. Freeze plain natural yoghurt, mashed banana or a little pureed pumpkin in an ice cube tray or enrichment toy instead - dogs are just as pleased with it and it costs you nothing.
Symptoms to watch for
Dairy trouble shows within hours as wind, bloating or diarrhoea. Chocolate poisoning brings restlessness, a racing heart, vomiting and tremors. Xylitol poisoning causes weakness, wobbliness, collapse or seizures, sometimes within half an hour, and is an emergency.
When to call the vet
Immediately for any chocolate, coffee, macadamia, raisin or sugar-free variety, without waiting for symptoms. Otherwise, only if diarrhoea persists beyond a day.
