What happens
A cooked, shelled prawn is a lean, low-fat scrap of protein and most dogs are delighted by them. There is nothing toxic in prawn meat. The cautions are practical. Raw prawns can carry bacteria and parasites, so they should always be cooked. Shells, tails and heads are sharp and are a genuine choking and blockage risk, particularly for small dogs. Prawns are also fairly high in sodium and cholesterol, and the ones humans eat are usually cooked in garlic butter, dusted in salt, or breaded and fried - all of which take a harmless treat and make it a bad idea. Shellfish can also be an allergen, so a first prawn should be a small one.
How much is safe?
One small prawn for a small dog, two or three for a large one, occasionally rather than routinely. This is a treat, not a food group.
How to prepare it
Cook them plainly - steamed or boiled, no butter, no garlic, no salt, no batter. Remove the shell, tail, head and the dark digestive tract along the back. Cool them and chop for small dogs.
Symptoms to watch for
Most reactions are mild stomach upset. Watch for gagging, retching or pawing at the mouth if a shell or tail went down. An allergic reaction is less common but shows as facial swelling, hives or sudden vomiting and is urgent.

Immediately for facial swelling, hives or breathing trouble. Also if your dog has swallowed shells and is gagging, drooling, retching or off its food.
