It is more useful than most starches, carrying a complete protein profile plus fibre, magnesium and iron, and it is gluten-free, which suits the small number of dogs with a wheat problem. The one thing worth doing properly is rinsing. Quinoa seeds are coated in saponins, natural compounds that taste bitter and can irritate the digestive tract, and while most packaged quinoa is pre-rinsed, giving it another rinse costs nothing. Beyond that, quinoa should be cooked - raw or undercooked quinoa is hard to digest - and introduced gradually, because the fibre content can loosen stools in a dog that is not used to it.
How much is safe?
A tablespoon of cooked quinoa for a small dog, up to a quarter of a cup for a large one, a few times a week. Introduce it in a small amount the first time.
How to prepare it
Rinse it thoroughly, cook it in plain water until soft and fluffy, cool it and serve plain. No oil, no salt, no stock, no seasoning, and nothing from a dressed salad.
Symptoms to watch for
