In moderation - a small piece of plain Weetabix is not harmful, but it is wheat, salt and added sugar, and it is usually served in milk, which most dogs do not digest well.
What happens
Weetabix is wholewheat, and there is nothing toxic in it. A small piece will not hurt a dog that has no wheat sensitivity. It is a caution rather than a yes for three reasons. It contains added sugar and a surprising amount of salt for something marketed as plain. It is very high in fibre, so a whole biscuit reliably means loose stools, particularly in a small dog. And it is almost always eaten in milk, which most adult dogs are lactose intolerant to some degree and which causes wind and diarrhoea. It is also worth remembering that a bowl of cereal in a dog is empty calories: it fills them without contributing anything a complete food has not already covered.
How much is safe?
A small corner of a dry biscuit for a small dog, up to half a biscuit for a large one, rarely. Dry rather than soaked in milk.
How to prepare it
Plain original Weetabix, dry, broken into small pieces. No milk, no sugar, no honey. Never the chocolate, fruit or flavoured varieties, which add sugar and sometimes raisins.
Symptoms to watch for
Loose stools or wind from the fibre, more so if milk was involved. Nothing serious is expected from plain Weetabix in a healthy dog.
When to call the vet
Rarely necessary - only if a flavoured variety containing raisins was eaten, or if diarrhoea persists more than a day.
