Pro Plan is Purina's premium tier, sold on science, sponsorship and vets. Across the 53 foods we have rated it averages 38/100 (Poor), ranking 269 of 304, and the reason is not subtle.

Look at how a bag opens: "High Quality Chicken 18%, Dried Poultry Protein, Rice, Wheat, Soya Meal". Three things there deserve your attention. "High Quality Chicken" is a marketing phrase with no legal definition - "chicken" is the regulated word, and "high quality" is doing no work except on you. The 18% is fresh weight, so most of it is water that leaves during cooking. And the "Dried Poultry Protein" that follows does not name a species.

Declared meat across this range is the lowest of any premium-priced brand we track. That is the finding, and it is not a close call.

None of this makes Pro Plan a bad food. It is nutritionally complete, it is rigorously made, and millions of dogs do fine on it. It makes it an expensive food whose label does not support its price, which is a different criticism and the one we are actually making.

If a vet put your dog on a specific Pro Plan diet for a specific reason, that reason still stands. If you picked it off a shelf because it looked like the serious option, compare it against the same money spent on a brand that names its meat.
