What happens
Cottage cheese is the dairy product vets most often tolerate in a bland diet, and for good reason. Much of the lactose is removed during production, so it upsets fewer dogs than milk, and plain versions are relatively low in fat compared with hard cheese. It is a source of protein and calcium, and many dogs find it very palatable, which makes it a useful way to hide a tablet. It remains a caution rather than a yes because dairy is still dairy: some dogs react to any of it, the sodium content in ordinary supermarket tubs is not trivial, and full-fat versions carry enough fat to matter for a dog prone to pancreatitis. Flavoured tubs with chives or onion are a firm no.
How much is safe?
A teaspoon for a small dog and up to a couple of tablespoons for a large one, a few times a week. Start with less than you think and see how your dog handles it before it becomes a routine.
How to prepare it
Plain, unflavoured, ideally low-salt and low-fat. Check the ingredients list contains nothing but milk, cultures and perhaps salt. Serve a small spoonful on its own or stirred through food. Never a flavoured tub containing chives, onion or garlic.
Symptoms to watch for
Lactose trouble shows within hours as wind, gurgling or loose stools. Too much fat or salt can cause vomiting or unusual thirst. None of this is normally serious, but it is uncomfortable.
When to call the vet
Rarely necessary. Ring your vet if diarrhoea lasts beyond a day, or if the tub contained onion or chives in any quantity.
