High-energy dog food
Some dogs burn through a normal bowl and stay lean anyway: working dogs, gundogs and agility dogs, spring-loaded adolescents, and any dog getting a lot more than an hour a day. What they need is not a different kind of food so much as a denser one, so the extra calories arrive without the bowl becoming enormous.

That density comes mostly from fat, which carries roughly twice the energy of protein or carbohydrate, so a higher fat percentage is the number worth finding on the analytical constituents. Good protein still matters for recovery and muscle maintenance, and named meat is where it should come from. Be wary of assuming 'working dog' on the front means a richer recipe: in the UK that phrase is often a VAT status rather than a nutritional claim, and some working-dog ranges are ordinary food in a different bag.
The honest caveat is that most dogs are not actually high-energy, and feeding a rich food to a dog who does not need it is one of the quicker routes to a weight problem. Judge by condition rather than ambition. Every food below is filtered for high-energy suitability and scored out of 100, with the full breakdown on each food page.
High-energy dog food FAQs
What is the best high-energy dog food?
The one that is calorie-dense from good ingredients rather than just fatty. Look for named meats, a fat level suited to the work your dog actually does, and a short readable ingredients list. The list above ranks every high-energy food by the ODF Score, which reads the label rather than the marketing.
Does my dog need high-energy food?
Most do not. It suits working dogs, sporting dogs and hard-exercising young dogs. A dog on an hour's walk a day is usually better on a standard adult recipe, and feeding rich food they are not burning is a common route to quiet weight gain.
Is working dog food the same as high-energy food?
Not reliably. In the UK 'working dog' is frequently a VAT designation rather than a nutritional standard, so some working-dog ranges are simply the standard recipe sold without VAT. Read the analytical constituents rather than the front of the bag.
How do I know if I am feeding enough?
By condition, not by the scoop. You should be able to feel ribs easily without seeing them, with a visible waist from above. Adjust gradually and reassess every couple of weeks, especially through a season of heavier work.
